Signs Your Brakes Need Attention
Your brakes will usually tell you when something isn't right — you just need to know what to listen and feel for. A grinding or squealing noise when you brake is one of the most common signs that pads are worn down. Whereas, a pulsing or vibrating feeling through the brake pedal often points to warped rotors.
If the car pulls to one side under braking, a calliper may be sticking. A soft or spongy pedal that sinks further than usual is worth acting on immediately, this can indicate air in the brake lines or a brake fluid issue. Warning signs include a squealing or grinding noise when you brake, a spongy or low pedal, the car pulling to one side when you stop, a brake warning light, or a longer stopping distance than usual. Any of those means it is time for an inspection. Do not put it off — worn pads chew rotors, and worn rotors turn a cheap job into an expensive one.
Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid flush every two years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can lead to a spongy pedal or brake fade under heavy use. A flush is a small job that keeps the system working the way it should.
Not always. Clutch feel can change because of a hydraulic issue, a stretched cable on older cars, or worn linkages, none of which need a full replacement. If the clutch is genuinely worn — slipping under load, biting very high or very low, shuddering on take-off — then yes, it needs replacing.
